What does your amount include?

Use an amount such as 1250 or 1,250.50.

GST in New Zealand is charged at 15%. This calculator adds 15% to a GST-exclusive amount and takes 3/23 of a GST-inclusive amount, which is the method published by Inland Revenue.

Add GST, remove GST, or work backwards from the GST amount using a private calculator built for New Zealand dollars.

Why use this calculator

  • Calculated in your browser

Amounts stay on your device. Nothing you type is sent to a server, and the page keeps no record once you close it.

  • No signup, no limits

Free to use as often as you need. There is no account to create, no paywall and no usage cap.

  • Ready for your spreadsheet

Keep a running list of calculations and download the lot as a CSV whenever you need to hand them on.

How the calculation works

Three questions cover almost every GST calculation. The calculator answers all three at once, but the arithmetic behind each one is short enough to check by hand.

  1. Adding GST

You have a price that excludes GST and need the total to charge.

    GST = amount × 0.15

$100.00 becomes $15.00 of GST and $115.00 to pay.

  2. Removing GST

You have a GST-inclusive price and need the GST inside it.

    GST = amount × 3 ÷ 23

$115.00 contains $15.00 of GST, leaving $100.00 excluding GST.

  3. Starting from the GST

You know the GST alone and need both prices behind it.

    Excluding GST = GST × 20 ÷ 3

$15.00 of GST means $100.00 excluding and $115.00 including.

Each result is rounded once to the nearest cent, and a fraction of exactly half a cent is discarded, following Inland Revenue's treatment of fractions of a cent.

Common GST questions

General information about how GST works in New Zealand, not tax advice. Check anything that affects a return with Inland Revenue or your accountant.

What is the GST rate in New Zealand?

GST is charged at 15% on most goods and services. A few supplies are zero-rated, such as exported goods and services, and some, including most financial services, are exempt.

How do I find the GST inside a price that already includes it?

Multiply the GST-inclusive price by 3 and divide by 23. On a $115.00 price that is $15.00 of GST, leaving $100.00 excluding GST.

Inland Revenue: charging GST

Is dividing by 1.15 the same thing?

It reaches the same answer. The 3/23 fraction is the one Inland Revenue publishes, and it avoids rounding a repeating decimal partway through the calculation.

When do I need to register for GST?

You must register when your turnover was at least $60,000 in the last 12 months, or you expect it will be at least $60,000 in the next 12 months.

Does this calculator send my numbers anywhere?

No. Every calculation runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and the history disappears when you close or reload the page.

Can I use it for refunds or credit notes?

Yes. Negative amounts are accepted, so you can work out the GST on a reduction. How that adjustment should be reported is still your decision.
